What’s in store in the Year of the Ox?

What’s in store in the Year of the Ox? 1st Feb 2009

A friend in Malaysia tried in vain to e-purchase a Chinese astrology book ”牛年运程” by a renowned Feng Shui master Mr Li Kui Ming 李居明 for her dad. She called it a ‘coffee talk book’ for her dad and friends. I’m not into astrology or feng shui stuff but decided to help by getting the book at a nearby 7-11 store. Before I mail it off, curiosity gets the better of me – I browse it to see what’s in store, to see what is it like ‘playing God’!

A large portion of the book is dedicated to the author’s prediction of US, North Asia’s economy, fate of those born in each Chinese zodiac year and use of various auspicious ornaments to enhance your fortune or to negate the bad luck.

It’s no fun ‘playing God’ – the more I read, the more self doubts I have. I read about watching out relationship problem in certain month. I read about mole on certain part of our face - mole which we should eliminate else …. I can’t help but look into the mirror. Alas!

Just when I decided I’ve enough and was about to put the book down (I much prefer to bask in God’s love for me than to believe what I’ve just read), a passage caught my attention – the author’s advice in 2009. Advice which somehow is more in line with my Christian belief : 学习沉默,学习宁静, 宁静致远. It reminds me of a quality of the Christian Life Community – SILENCE. The author also spoke about the value of humour 快乐是一种抉择, the need to humble ourselves when we succeed, raise ourselves up appropriately when we are down 为自己拍拍掌, the importance of keeping our life simple rather than filling it up/cluttering it with unimportant paraphernalia大脑比杂物重要.

With an OPEN and SILENT mind, we are able to understand better and learn from each other.
