Pain

Pain 19 April 2006

My dad squints and makes some soft sound when the needle is poked into the vein in his arm. I watch by his side and feel the great pain in my heart! What is on the mind of my dad and the other fellow haemodialysis patients? What enormous courage my dad and his friends possess to face and accept the pain again and again!

How often we fear pain, avoid pain. I nearly fainted when I first watched my dad receiving his treatment. A passenger screaming in pain from a fish stink caused my taxi driver Uncle to panic and suffered a heart attack on their way to the hospital. A friend who is battling cancer said he does not fear death but is afraid of pain.

Recently I read a reflection written by a priest - ā€œany person who knows how to suffer pain emerges purified, even-tempered, and a thousand times more compassionate.ā€

If we could see pain as a Gift from God to make us a better person, may be we would fear less, moan less and gradually learn to face and accept pain gracefully. Iā€™m not sure I could do it when the time comes. For now, I would continue to pray for God to touch those who have to suffer pain. May God be with them always, comfort and encourage them to make their painful journey a graceful one.
